Weekend Whatnots

by Jules on February 1, 2013

Oh what a week. I have no excuse for not posting, except that I just didn’t have the energy. I usually try to write at night, but I think I’m going to have to change that.  I can’t tell you how many times I have heard “as you get older . .” from Doctors in the last few years – UGH! Well anyhoo . .it does get harder to feel productive while sitting on the couch watching “Breaking Bad” at night (which, by the way, I will not be watching anymore . . I don’t like watching shows that have me upset about them two days later!).

I may need to revamp my schedule and try writing first thing in the morning (kinda like exercising first thing, right?).

My cat, Monkey had a little bit of funk going on around his mouth over the holidays and I was worried that it may be ringworm, or be related to his stinky breath. $300 later, the vet gave us the good news that his blood work was perfect and prescribed antibiotics and prednisilone. His mouth is looking better, but since he is 15 years old and has never had his teeth cleaned, I emailed the vet and asked if it was something we should schedule. Here is the response I received:

This is a hard call –for a couple of reasons. It is possible that the teeth are what’s holding Monkey back – I would expect some improvement on these meds, but only a thorough cleaning would fix that for good. But he may have other issues, like gastro-intestinal problems such as cancer. His signs are similar to that of cats with that, but to know for a fact one way or another, we would have to do endoscopy ($1200 ). If we elect a dental procedure, he really should go through our dentist Dr Frost, and that would likely be $1000 – $1200. So, either way, no guarantees but either may help give us an answer, but lots of money.

First of all, one of the other problems he has is daily vomiting and weight loss. As you can imagine, I was not very excited by his response. I haven’t decided what to do, but I’m thinking I may call the local dental specialist and discuss a teeth cleaning with them. The good news is, the meds have helped –  we have not had much vomiting and his appetite has been great (thank you steroids!). I am hopeful that he just has issues with his teeth, and it’s NOT some kind of cancer. Have you ever heard of a dental cleaning costing $1,000 – $1,200? I will not put my cat through an endoscopy just to rule out cancer, but I am totally willing to clean his teeth if it will make him feel better.

On a completely different note, I finished three websites over the last few weeks. One was a pro-bono job for my sister for an education foundation in Hermosa Beach. It turned out to be a huge project, but I’m glad I could help and so happy with the way it turned out! Hermosa Beach Education Foundation.

I also created a site for a local mom that opened a consignment boutique for kids. I think it turned out TOO CUTE! Last but not least, I also worked with a local photographer that does landscape photography. Her site just went live on Friday.

Now, I’m ready for our Super Bowl party on Sunday. I can’t wait for all of commercials and I know that Cali can’t wait to beg each of our guests for snacks. Who are you going to be cheering for? Are you going to be watching the Puppy Bowl or the Ravens and 49′ers??

I hope you have a great weekend!

I’m so sorry to hear about your cat, it’s so hard when our animals get old and we don’t always know what’s troubling them. I’m glad the meds seemed to help his stomach a bit. Last time my cat had a dental it was around 500.00, and that included several extractions. (He has bad teeth.) 1000.00 seems a bit excessive.

I’m sending big hugs to Monkey, virtual hugs are probably better between my fluffy self and a cat, it’s not worked out too well in person yet!!

Gonna check out your websites – you’re very clever!!

And finally, we’re hoping to watch the puppy bowl and the Super Bowl and it will be 49ers all the way as that’s our local team!! Woohoo!!

    Have fun,

    Your pal Snoopy :)

Jeez Julie. First, why didn’t your vet tell you about possible stomach cancer when you had the cat in? Second I think that amount for a dentist is very high (Sampson, a big dog is expected to be between $500 and $700). I am glad the meds are helping Monkey feel better though.

We watched the SB and I was disappointed, I wanted San Fran to win, still it was a decent game with some good (Budweiser Clydesdale) and not so good (Go Daddy) commercials.

I’m off to check out your websites. :-)

Thanks for stopping by with your good wishes. I know what you mean about finding enough energy for everything. I agree the dental estimate seems really high. Hopefully you’ve found a good resolution by now. We had a lot of weight loss and vomiting without our cat and it turned out to be from a thyroid problem.
